Best Places to Work in Illinois
For the second year in a row, Avalon Risk Management has been named as one of the 2012 Best Places to Work in Illinois, where our corporate headquarters is based. Avalon was proud to rank 16 out of 31 small-to-medium sized companies (15-249 employees) selected for the award.  In 2011, Avalon also ranked 12th nationally in the Best Places to Work in Insurance by Business Insurance magazine.

“At Avalon, we recognize that employee engagement leads to satisfied customers and provides a winning combination for any successful business,” said Lisa Gelsomino, Avalon’s President/CEO.

In order to be selected, the Best Companies Group reviews a two-part assessment to determine which companies qualify and their individual ranking. The first part (25%) consisted of evaluating each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices and demographics. The second part (75%) consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. The combined scores determines the top companies and the final ranking.

Avalon Executive Appointments and International Expansion Avalon is proud to announce the promotion of Kevin Sarsfield to Senior Vice President, Southern Division & International Development and the appointment of Grant Goldsmith as Vice President of Business Development for our Southern Division.

In Kevin’s new role, he will continue to be based in our Miami office and be responsible for our Southern Division while also taking on responsibility for our international expansion in Latin America, Australia, Europe and the Middle East.

As Vice President of Business Development, Grant’s experience is a perfect fit to oversee and further develop Avalon’s broad base of product lines within our Southern Division. With the addition of Grant to the management team, Avalon has also acquired Overwatch, Inc., which specializes in high-risk insurance for U.S. Government, United Nations, NATO and International Commercial Contractors working globally, particularly in areas such as the Middle East and Africa.  Please join us in congratulating Kevin and welcoming Grant to the Avalon team.

FIATA 2012 World Congress
A few years ago, when FIATA held their World Congress in Vancouver, a local tribe presented FIATA with a “talking stick” to signify success in meetings. Each year, the stick passes from the current host country group to the next host country group.

Because this year’s World Congress is in Los Angeles, the talking sick was passed onto TIA as this year’s host country group.

The picture above shows Richard Gluck, Bob Voltmann of TIA, the 2011 Egyptian host Mazen Nazim, K.C. Pelle, Kevin Sarsfield of Avalon, Michael McDaniel, and Mike Brown of Avalon.

TIA Scholarship and Sponsorship
At this year’s 34th Annual TIA Convention & Trade Show, Avalon was proud to sponsor a 5k run/3k walk to benefit the TIA Foundation. We also provided $5,000 in scholarships to the following first-time attendees, allowing them the opportunity to attend the convention and further develop their career in the logistics industry:

  • David Abell, A.M. Transport Services, Inc.
  • Michael Barry, Choptank Transport
  • Web Brown, Southeastern Logistics Solutions
  • Rodney Cromwell, Schneider
