Electronic Logging Device Mandate

In 2015, the electronic logging device (ELD) mandate was proposed in to improve safety. These devices are attached to the truck and tracks how long it has been on the road. This will keep exhausted drivers off the road. Moreover, time logs will be accurate and seamless since time and locations are recorded, an improvement over paper logs. However, there is much concern and debate regarding ELD’s implementation. There are dozens of ELDs available on the market and registered with the FMSCA, so choosing one can be arduous. Each of these devices cost hundreds of dollars, so this can be a substantial cost for those operating a large fleet. Once installed, drivers and managers will also need to be trained. Enforcement of the ELD mandate will begin on December 18 and violations will be documented. Fortunately, drivers in vehicles without an ELD will not be placed out of service. This mandate will begin on April 1, 2018.
