United States
levies 10 percent import tariffs on softwood lumber from
four Canadian provinces
Beginning April 15, the United States will
require a 10 percent duty on imports of softwood lumber
products from the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Quebec,
Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The duties will be imposed until
the United States has collected $54.8 million.
A press release from the Office of the U.S. Trade
Representative said the duties were initiated because Canada
did not meet a March deadline for remedial action following
a February ruling that Canada violated the 2006 Softwood
Lumber Agreement by failing to properly calculate quotas on
exports of softwood lumber products during the first six
months of 2007.
Under the ruling, Canada was required to collect an
additional 10 percent export charge on softwood lumber
shipments from its eastern provinces, until about $54.8
million had been collected. Instead, Canada offered to pay
$36.66 million to the U.S. government, an offer the USTR
rejected April 2.
