CPSC joins CBP in import testing program at ports
Reacting to the multitude of product recalls in the past year, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is teaming with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to develop new import strategies and a greater presence at the ports.
At the Port of Long Beach in California, the second-busiest container port in the nation, the CPSC is creating its new Import Surveillance Division, which in coordination with CBP, is tasked with inspecting, detecting and stopping hazardous products from entering the United States.
The surveillance will examine selected products for unsafe levels of lead, loose parts posing a choke risk, faulty wiring in electrical components and other potential hazards. After the start at Long Beach, the program will expand to other ports as the agency’s resources allow.
Last year, the CPSC collected $2.75 million in civil penalties for violations of safety rules after an average of 28 products per week were recalled. With increased scrutiny on the safety of imported goods, substantial civil penalties are expected.
Avalon’s Regulatory Defense, as part of its Combined Transit Liability (CTL) program, provides defense costs for fines and penalties assessed against your company by various government agencies including the CPSC. While Regulatory Defense does not pay the actual fines, significant legal expenses are often incurred to defend against the penalties and secure a more favorable settlement. Regulatory Defense appoints legal experts to assist in mitigating the penalty and pays all legal fees in full.
