Emissions requirements for carriers operating in California

Starting in 2008, carriers operating in California are subject to stricter emissions regulations.

All diesel-fueled commercial motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 10,000 pounds can remain idle for no longer than five minutes. 2008 model year trucks and upcoming model years must have a mechanism to shut down the engine after five minutes of idling.

Sleeper berths are no longer exempt from the idling regulation. Carriers may consider purchasing an auxiliary power system (APS) or other idle reduction equipment to increase cab comfort. Idle reduction equipment must not be used for more than five minutes when within 100 feet of a restricted area. An APS installed on a 2007 model year truck or newer must meet the ultra low emission vehicle requirements.

More information on the emissions regulations and idle reduction technology is available on the Air Resources Board Web site, www.arb.ca.gov.
