TWIC enrollment begins

The Wilmington, Del. port is the first to participate in the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program. Enrollment began on Oct. 9, six months after the Transportation Security Administration scheduled.

TWIC is designed to improve port security by requiring all personnel needing unescorted access to secure port areas to carry a valid identification card. More than 750,000 port employees, longshoremen, mariners and truckers are expected to enroll.

Applicants can save time by pre-enrolling online at www.twicprogram.tsa.dhs.gov/TWICWebApp/. The TWIC card costs $132.50 and is valid for five years. If the applicant already passed a comparable background check, the fee is $105.25.

An additional 11 ports will start enrolling in November as follows:

Early November

  • Corpus Christi, Texas

Mid-November

  • Baton Rouge, La.
  • Beaumont, Texas
  • Honolulu, Hawaii
  • Oakland, Calif.
  • Tacoma, Wash.

Late November
