NHTSA issues final rule on ESC

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a final rule on April 5, 2007 requiring passenger cars, trucks and buses to install an electronic stability control (ESC) system.

Vehicles weighing 10,000 pounds or less are subject to this ruling. ESC systems automatically control the braking of individual wheels to help drivers gain control when the vehicle loses directional stability or control.

According to the final rule, NHTSA expects the new regulation to decrease the number of single-vehicle, passenger car crashes by 34 percent and SUV crashes by 59 percent. The rule also says, the ESC system is expected to prevent 71 percent of passenger car rollovers and 84 percent of SUV rollovers, saving 5,300-9,600 lives and preventing 156,000- 238,000 injuries annually.

All light vehicles are required to have an ESC system installed by the 2012 car model year. For the complete rule, please visit, http://www.safercar.gov/esc/Rule.pdf.
