Cargo Theft Prevention
Officials meet to create new initiative

Nearly 100 officials from 14 states gathered in Orlando on Nov. 29 to create the first national cargo theft task force. Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the National Insurance Crime Bureau developed the meeting, but it has been in the works since 2004. They hope to combat the crime which is estimated to cost the U.S. more than $15 billion annually.

The meeting was named the National Commercial Vehicle and Cargo Theft Initiative workshop, and provided a forum for experts to discuss ways to prevent theft of goods from trucks, railcars and sea containers.

“People in America do not understand the magnitude of this crime,” said Ed Dean, Marion County Sheriff. “It has links to terrorism and drug cartels. We’re getting stolen blind. We have to bring more awareness of this issue to this country.”

FBI Special Agent Duncan Edwards talked about the agency’s Major Theft Unit, which focuses on cargo theft as it relates to seaports, border crossings and thefts at international airports.

Dean hopes the FBI will give the National Commercial Vehicle and Cargo Theft Task Force enough information to call for congressional hearings to see if more employees and funding are needed.

“When you consider that many of the thefts can be linked to terrorism, the FBI should be taking the lead,” Dean said.
