PierPass
Not Just for Imports
Exports Beginning August 7, 2006, exporters who deliver their containers to marine terminals in
the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach must claim their booking number before the boxes arrive at the terminals. Exporters are
required to enter their booking numbers into their accounts via the PierPass website and pay electronically $50 per
20-foot container and
$100 per 40-foot container. Exporters whose containers arrive during peak hours without being properly booked will have their
shipments turned away.
Imports As of April 3, 2006, PierPass is charging $50 per TEU to move containers in and out of the ports of Los
Angeles and Long Beach during weekday hours, up from $40 since July 2005. The PierPass program has roughly one-third
of all containers being moved at off-peak hours, but drivers working the night gates have not been getting additional turns, deeming the
program unsuccessful.
